Tammy- At some point during my college years I began to feel the need for a fitness routine, so I began running several times a week. Several years later, a guy named Evan Derv began teaching classes at the Lambright center. Before we knew it, my friends and I were doing crazy things like wall balls, going on adventure runs through campus, AMRAPS, RFT, attempting double-unders, and handstand push ups. We had never had a male instructor and before long he had us "hooked" on his new way of doing things.
When Evan left Tech and opened up his new box "Crossfit Ruston" in the summer of 2012, I of course wanted to try this new thing to see what it was all about. My daughter, Kennedy and I were signed up during the first week. To say that I was completely out of my comfort zone during those first weeks is an understatement.
With my 50th birthday quickly approaching at the end of that summer, I decided that instead of growing old gracefully, I would continue with this Crossfit in an attempt to get myself in the best shape of my life, and that is exactly what has happened. For the first time, I actually look forward to working out. I also love that my husband, Scott, seeing my enthusiasm, joined a few months later. We now enjoy this experience together
I know for a fact that I will never be one of the strongest ladies in the box, but my goal has always been to be the best version of myself that I can be. My key to success has been to always keep a journal. I record each day's WOD and the weights used and reps completed and have been able to track my progress over the past year and a half. I do not worry about competing with anyone but myself, and using this approach I have been able to push myself and to see how far I have come since July 2012.
Even after a year and a half, I do still get butterflies before every WOD. I'm not sure these will ever go away, but I can honestly say that my decision to begin Crossfit was one of the best decisions I have ever made for me personally. I'm 51, feeling great, and am doing things I have never tried before!
Scott- Crossfit Ruston opened in July 2012. I didn’t join until October 22,2012. My wife (Tammy) and daughter (Kennedy) started the day CFR opened. This experience has been like no other I have ever been through in my 54 years. Every time I step in the box I am reminded of things that I am able to accomplish that I thought were long gone. It took me a few months of convincing by my wife and daughter, but I am grateful that I finally took the first step and that first step was going to the Box the very first time.
I can honestly tell you that I am in the best shape of my life and that includes playing football at LA TECH for 4 years ( a long time ago). From the 5:00 a.m. WODS to the fit Fridays and the encouragement by the best fitness trainers, this has been a life changing experience. I have really enjoyed working out alongside my wife 5 days a week and this has given us a newfound perspective on life in general.
The workouts at CFR are the hardest things I have ever done, but the rewards are worth every single minute we spend doing Push-ups, Squats, Kettle bell swings, Sit-ups, Rows, Rope slams, Pull-ups, T2b, S2o, Runs, HSPU’s, Dead lifts, Power cleans, Tire flips, Shuttle runs, Wall balls, HSPU, ETC. ETC….. As you can tell there is a tremendous amount of variety in these workouts and I believe that is what I enjoy the most. I certainly never have to think about what workout I am going to do anymore. It is all planned out for you.
I have never become involved in any type of activity where I have met more people and established more ongoing friendships than joining Crossfit-Ruston.
My reluctance to walk through those doors on Ida Alley on October 22,2012 were quickly met with an enthusiastic team of trainers and owners who made me feel like I was their only client. Thanks for the help and encouragement you give all your members every day.
